(What time is it?)
So it turns out that this is the first year Bangladesh has instituted Daylight Savings Time (back in May). Apparently our computers were not aware of this new change and we based our sense of time off the computer time zone setting for Dhaka (GMT + 6) but in fact, right now Dhaka is GMT +7. This means we have been thinking it was an hour earlier than it was all week long. We haven’t had any real appointments our first week here so there was really nothing to indicate that we were an hour behind everyone else.
We arrived this morning at Atticus’ first day of school and there were no other parents around. ‘Strange,’ we thought, ‘we’re only like 2 minutes early.’ Then we went to the office and the very helpful administrator (forgot his name - oops) said ‘but you are an hour late....’ At that point, after some confused fumbling with our phones and looking at his clock pretty stupidly, we realized that the time was wrong on our phones. When the administrator discovered that we had been living here a week with the wrong time the whole time he found it endlessly hilarious. As we filled out the paperwork for entry, he just kept thinking of it and laughing again. I guess it is pretty funny…
Everything worked out ok though and we got Atticus dropped off and he took him up to his classroom. We’ll meet the teacher this afternoon and update on how his first day went. The administrator told us there is another American boy in his class that also doesn’t speak French, so it will be nice for Atticus to have comrade to learn French with.

This is quite funny. Remember when I asked you guys if they were on day light savings time in Bangladesh, and if they were what time it would be?
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Atticus has a friend who also doesn't know French. I had to test a kindergarten boy today who only spoke Spanish. I kept thinking of Atticus and hoping his transition is going smoothly. This little boy was doing great.
